Sustainable Engineering Certificate

An undergraduate Certificate in Sustainable Engineering is available to all undergraduate engineering students. The certificate is housed in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and administered through the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation. The certificate provides interested students with an awareness and sensitivity to environmental issues and consequences of engineering systems consistent with their engineering major. The certificate builds upon an increasing number of courses being offered with an emphasis on sustainability and requires 12 credits to complete.

EMPOWER: Engineering for the Future

This course investigates renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric, wind, and alternative fuels by exploring Brazil’s utilization of sustainable and clean power. Students experience lectures from experts on the field of renewable energy, various aspects of Brazilian culture (e.g., economics, history, social issues), as well as gain initial instruction on Portuguese. The course culminates with a 10-day field experience in Brazil. Here, students engage in dialogue with Brazilian sustainable energy industry leaders as well as experience Brazil through a variety of cultural and historic activities. Specifically, students will visit Itapúa Dam and Iguacu Falls, Electropaulo High Tech Center, Sao Joao Sugar Mill and Distillery, Voith Siemens, Bandeirantes Landfill and Methane Reclamation Facility, the Sugar Cane Growers Association, as well as faculty researching renewable energy at the UNICAMP. For the 2008 summer session, 17 upper class engineering students are taking the course from various fields of engineering (i.e., chemical, civil and environmental, industrial, mechanical, and energy policy) from multiple institutions (i.e., the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State, CMU, TAMU, UT Austin, Humbolt State, and UC Davis).
